survey of Gonzales Canyon Open Space May 12, 2011 9:30 AM I'm in Torrey Highlands Park, and parking here is posted two hour limit 7 AM - 3 PM N 32 57.766 W 117 13.388 N end of park, mileage 0.00 [57-766-13-388] proceding N on unpaved path toward Gonzales Canyon [on my mountain bike] 762-390 765-390 trail splits, steep descent to R, I keep L to reach end of headland 57-784-13-395! end of headland, and end of this part [I turn around] back at junction [765-390], I go down the steep descent 800-376 823-383 57-823-13-383 trial emerges on a dirt road under some power lines, I turn L 843-382 trail splits, L follows power lines, I follow R branch 57-860-13-375, side trail to R and an interpretive bulletin board with a map, I go SA to survey a short portion of the trail 914-371! the trail becomes somewhat overgrown, I park my bike here and walk the continuation is apparently a very steep social trail to the L, therefore I turn around, end of this part mileage here about 0.2 miles back at the bulletin board [57-860-13-375], I turn L into the side trail 851-364 849-351 854-335! the trail is getting very steep and rocky, I turn around here, end of this part 57-833-13-375 previously surveyed junction, I go the other way to follow the power lines roughly SE 57-730-13-309 668-304 667-303 638-299 57-584-13-279! the trail emerges on a side road very near the park access road sharp L is a smaller trail, possibly the other end of that very steep trail there is a gate here, as shown on the map, there must be another trail, roughly on the other side, I ride around looking for it 603--293 I enter what appears to be a trail along the S side of the park, just N of some athletic fields 604--303 the way is fenced, and there is a gate entering an off-leash area [for dogs], I try to go around the area to the N 644--342 the park is pretty well fenced on the W side, if there is a trailhead here, I can't find it 57--845--13--378 previously surveryed junction, this time I follow the power lines roughly NW [change to 57-833-13-375 to match previous reading] 861-403! the road get so steep I can no longer handle my bike, end of this part 10:20 back at the truck, I'm going to look for another trailhead [the one on Sword Way] 57-982-12-850 signed entrance to Gonzales Canyon Open Space on Sword Way I descend a steep single track into the canyon 991-859 998-870 T intersection, I turn R 988-805 986-792 990-694 989-664 993-599 57-994-12-548 fainter side trail L, probably a social shortcut 58-0-12-523 this trail merges on a decomposed granite dirt road to which that social trail leads directly, it's a slanted T intersection, I turn slightly R 998-486 off to the L is what appears to be a social trail [it leads to what may be an informal BMX course or mountain bike play area] 985-388 sewer access hatch, and what appears to be a much fainter trail to the R 980-360 57-963-12-342 another sewer access hatch, and a fainter, but fairly well used, wide trail to the R, I turn R 928-334 the trail narrows, but it has water bars in it, it's been worked on 913-329 914-323 888-312 883-306 875-302 the water bars become so closely spaced that they resemble steps 844-273 this is very much like a stairway 57-821-12-256 T intersection of trails, I turn R, I am now on foot [I didn't want to carry my bike up the stairway, so I parked it] 753-257! SA the trail passes under a road [probably Del Mar Heights Rd], and there is no visible road access, I turn around back at the jucntion, I go the other way [57-821-12-256] 838-247 853-247 I turn R to go through a latched, but unlockable gate 57-852-12-240 end of a small cul-de-sac, I continue in order to check the street signs 858-199! first intersection, this is Castillo Glen, the cross street is Valerio Trail, end of this part, I turn around [I go back into Gonzales Canyon by the same route] 57--954--12--341 previously surveyed junction, I turn R [change to 57-963-12-342 to match previous reading] 970-295 979-248 952-177 945-156 the road jogs L to cross a dry creek [apparently Gonzales Creek] 954-107 938-77 910-7 895-927 57-914-11-883 gated, paved road to L, I turn L 930-886! at the gate there is a no-trespassing sign, end of this part, I turn around L on main road [57-914-11-883] 959-800 966-718 20-644 15-636 4-647 58-1-11-628 trail comes to a cul-de-sac and crosses it I turn R and ride on the road so I can identify it 943-583! first intersection, this is Pacific Highlands Ranch Pkwy, to the R is Blazing Star Ln I go back to the end of the cul-de-sac and continue on the trail [58-1-11-628] 25-532 58-43-11-406 large side trail to R, I continue SA 59-342 93-249 124-194 a little parklike area to R with benches and picnic tables and a street [Quail Run St] beyond, I continue on the trail 58-144-11-155 trail ends on a cul-de-sac, road may eventually be extended L mileage 5.96 I turn R 126-132 right from Lopelia Meadows Pl to Quail Run St 106-180! R into that little park, and I stop calling lat/lon, end of this part I turn L and go back the way I came along the trail 7.30 miles, to L is the trail with the steps in it, I continue SA 7.47 miles, to L is the trail from which I entered this road [58-0-12-523], I continue SA on this road 9-550 side road R, I turn R 57-534 this road is paved 79-533 58-106-12-555 end of cul-de sac, I turn R and follow the road 191-550! first intersection, this is Rancho Capistrano Bend, L and R is Rancho Verde Trail, end of this part, I turn around 58--4--12--547 back at the place where I turned off, I turn R and continue down Gonzales Canyon [replace with 9-550 to match previous reading] 20-580 22-628 30-704 35-718 31-742 50-788 51-838 119-963 58-114-13-29 paved road to R, I turn slightly L to stay on the unpaved road in the Open Space 83-62 58-72-13-135 sharp L is a single track which probably goes back to the trailhead where I entered [from Sword Way], I continue SA 78-280 69-346 58-63-13-359-A side trail to L, probably one on the map 68-391 59-434 77-470 93-542 89-564 93-565 58-101-13-609-B I'm under power lines, and to L is a road which apparently runs up to Torrey Highland Park along the power lines 113-634 the road enters what looks like a ranch [corrals and stables] 149-639! I'm obviously in somebody's ranch, end of this part, I turn around mileage here about 8.85 58--70--13--139 I veer R [into a single track] at a previously surveyed junction [change to 58-72-13-135 to match previous reading] 57-79 this part is quite overgrown but easy to follow 63-57 54-38-C I come out of the thicket 37-984 here begins a fence to my L parallel to the trail 28-959 6-903 10-880 a stream crossing with tree trunks interfering [I have to carry my bike through] 0--870 the trail ends at a previously surveyed junction, end of this part [change to 998-870! to match previous reading] 12:46 PM 9.52 miles, back at the truck, end of this part [I drive to Carmel Country Rd to check out the improvements to the Carmel Valley Creek Bike Path] parking area on Carmel Country Rd for the CVREP trail and other trails it is at Clews Ranch Rd approximate center of parking area is at N 32 56.407 W 117 12.785
