survey of trails in Guajome Regional Park October 17, 2011 N 33 14.974 W 117 17.812 entrance to Mance Buchanan Park on College Blvd near the San Luis Rey River [14-974-17-812] 953-869 access of San Luis Rey River Trail inside the park 647-69 apparent NW corner of park next to school playground 595-985! SW side of the park, with a parking area and street access distance from park entrance on College Blvd to this part 0.67 miles I go out to the street and find that this is signed as Cesar Chavez Middle School at 202 Oleander Dr I return by a sidewalk along the S side of the park and enter the San Luis Rey River Bike Path and go E 1.35 miles I pass under College Blvd 1.89 miles, path emerges on Andrew Jackson St almost opposite Polk St, and I turn L 1.96 street turns R and becomes Tyler St 2.05 L into bike trail 2.90 bike path ends this is 14-798-16-914 street parking is by permit only, but there is an unpaved parking lot with a capacity of about a half dozen I follow an informal but wide trail E along the edge of the highway [C-76] an unpaved road farther N is blocked by a locked gate and no trespassing sign, and it appears to go toward the river I pass through a very large passageway under the highway, it is large enoung to be driven coordinates on the S side of the passageway are 14-856-16-667 848-652 the trail branches, I take the R branch 14-771-16-617 side path to R, smaller, probably the Nature Trail, I continue SA 726-577 this is signed as Willow Trail 676-555 657-526 658-513 14-648-16-442 small bridge across small creek to my R, and a trail on the other side, signed as Nature Trail RVs parked in a parking lot to my L 636-385 14-633-16-343 junction of four trails, I go roughly SA 645-282 I turn slightly L onto a smaller trail to go up to the top of a hill 687-176 a picnic table at a trail junction near the summit and also near a paved road this must be the Summit Trail, I stop here and eat my lunch I turn R and follow the Summit Trail 669-119 14-648-16-79 this trail joins the Willow Trail [draw a Willow Trail connection from here to the junction at 14-633-16-343!, then continue drawing here at 14-648-16-79] 595-959 539-841 14-517-15-832 T intersection with Luiseno Trail and Upper Pond Trail, it's not clear which direction is which, I turn L 510-823 491-835 14-466-15-845 four-way junction, I turn L to follow what is probably the Upper Pond Trail, there is a pond nearby 453-831 the Upper Pond is to my R, and I stop to take pictures of it 427-810 422-797 trail SA and to R, I turn R 403-785 according to a sign, this is the Santa Fe Trail 359-790 331-784 246-775 smaller trail L, I keep R 230-796 225-818 small stream crossing 234-836 14-261-15-878! a signed trailhead on N Santa Fe Ave at Darwin Dr street access through a baffle in the fence rather than ride along N Santa Fe Ave, I turn around and go back the way I came 251--776 previously surveyed junction, I turn R [change to 246-775 to match previous reading] this part of the trail is narrower and softer 192-678 14-194-15-659 trail emerges on a dirt road at 2260 Glenview Lane, it is signed the park map shows a trail curving over to N Santa Fe, but I can't find it, so I follow the dirt road 14-139-15-566 dirt road emerges on N Santa Fe, it is unsigned, I turn sharp R 157-685! L on Melrose Dr, using pedestrian crossing I pass Willowbrook to my L and continue on Melrose, looking for a trail to my L I approach Sagewood Dr, and have seen nothing resembling a trail, so I turn L there's no outlet [on Sagewood Dr], so I make a U-turn I turn R on Willowbrook Dr 14-85-15-596 the road turns R and there is a signed trailhead to the L, and an open gate in the fence, I go through the gate and enter the trail 53-480 32-472 996-464 some kind of road to trail to my R, apparently not official, I continue SA 884-430 13-865-15-388 T intersection with a bulletin board and pamphlets, I turn R 857-385 685-499 672-479 SA is a paved road, to R is an unpaved trail with a gate across it, a pedestrian gate to L of automobile gate is unlocked, so I go through and continue on the trail 677-495 667-515 575-592 545-559 large field to my R with only a few informal tracks in it [the grass growing the field appears to have been mowed] 539-543 13-546-15-527 trail emerges on a pave path or road, I turn R 512-507 485-449 464-405 the trail here runs along the right side of the road, probably an access road to that Sports Park 437-374 13-282-15-371! T intersection, W Bobier Dr L, Oceanside Blvd R, and this is Sports Park Way I turn around and go back the way I came [I explore a bit of the sports park and take some pics][ 13--861--15--367 previously surveyed junction, I go SA [change to 13-865-15-388 to match previous reading] 872-333 939-276 966-230 989-180 this is near the old adobe and is apparently a trail junction, I keep R 971-69! apparent end of road at caretaker's house, no access to a nearby road, I turn back I come back to the junction [989-180] and turn R, and go through a small gate in the fence 71-169! junction with N Santa Fe Ave, end of this part I so S on N Santa Fe and re-enter Guajome Park at the Darwin trailhead 14--267--15--886 [Darwin Trailhead] [change to 14-261-15-878 to match previous reading] I follow the Upper Pond Trail to go around the pond the other way 341-830 349-834 376-860 419-872 14--453--15--851 previously encountered junction, I turn L [change to 14-466-15-845 to match previous reading] 467-869 14-509-15-923 T intersection R apparently goes to a previously encountered intersection, I turn L 506-923 536-27 539-32 547-92 559-155 556-251 541-295 a sign saying this is Luiseno Trail 511-330 14-510-16-359 T intersection, I turn L 499-362! trail enters a parking area there is a $3 fee to park here I go back to the T intersection [14-510-16-359] and go SA 539-370 596-352 623-338 just short of a previously surveyed intersection, I turn L into Nature Trail 622-427 626-431 small bridge over to larger trail to my R 628-479 629-546 a wooden bridge over a small creek 633-554 650-570 743-625 770-625 780--620 trail ends at previousl surveyed junction, end of this part [change to 14-771-16-617! to match previous reading] I turn L 14--844--16--651 previously encountered junction, I turn R [change to 848-652 to match previous reading] this may be an old alighment of C-76, there is an old sign on it and some highway markers 881-464 a small sidewalk L going up to the road, I follow the trail [which gets narrower and hillier] 873-448 14-846-16-389! trail ends on access road to campground, end of this part [I ride through the campground, then back to the starting point via Guajome Lake Rd, C-76 and the San Luis Rey River Path] 2:06 PM back at the truck, 14.1 miles
